The East Sea Coast Guard in Gangwon-do (Gangwon Province) announced that the number of visitors coming to see Dokdo patrol boats has shown a sharp increase since the unexpected sinking of the Cheonan Corvette in late March.
Others believe Japan’s plan to alter its school textbooks this year to claim Korea’s lone island of Dokdo as Japanese territory also played a role in raising the public awareness of the importance of sea territory.
The total number of tourists to see the 5,000-ton “Sambong-ho,” the 3,000-ton “Taepyeongyang 7” (the Pacific), the 1,500-ton “Jemin 11” and other patrol ships that sail around Dokdo, recorded 4,847 until June this year, a 92 percent increase from the same time last year, with 2,883 people.
Over half the visitors (55.6 percent) were students from elementary and middle schools.
Boosted by the recent popularity, the East Sea Coast Guard plans to diversify programs for youngsters by allowing them to experience more things aside from watching promotional videos, such as looking around the wheel room, at the cannons and at the helipads.
“The tours to local patrol ships are also benefitting other tourist sites nearby like Cheongok Cave and Jeongdongjin as they come in a package,” said an official at the East Sea Coast Guard.
Those interested in taking a tour can visit the East Sea Coast Guard Homepage (http://eh.kcg.go.kr/donghae/) (Korean language) or call (☎033-532-0030). Overseas tourists should contact Korea Travel Phone (1330) that provides a free interpreting service in English, Chinese and Japanese.
