11th World Firefighter Games staged in Daegu

The 2010 World Firefighters Games was held in Daegu, Korea from August 21 to 29.

Held in Korea for the first time since its inception in 1990, the World Firefighters Games are intended to promote health and fitness, to exchange information between Fire Services, to foster comradeship among firefighters, and to encourage family participation. Some 6000 participants from 51 countries joined under the slogan, “Friends for life.”

Korea achieved an impressive 161 gold medals in 74 events, followed by England with 72 medals and Hong Kong with 66 medals.

The Toughest Firefighter Alive (TFA) is considered to be the most challenging yet exciting game. There are four parts to the competition, beginning with a hose run with full firefighting kit for 80m.

In the second part of the competition, firefighters carry an 80kg mannequin and equipment, and in the third segment they carry firefighting equipment up a tower using ropes. In the last part of the competition, the stair climb, competitors climb to the top of the 200m tower. This year, Joachim Posanz from Germany won the title.

A Fire and Safety Expo was held alongside the competition, with some 58,000 visitors from 22 countries. Safety exhibitions presented new innovations in fire safety and introduced advanced products.

The World Firefighter Games was first held in Auckland, New Zealand in 1990 and has since been held in the United States (Las Vegas, 1992), Australia (Perth, 1994), Canada (Edmonton, 1996), South Africa (Durban, 1998), France (Mante, 2000), New Zealand (Christchurch, 2002), England (Sheffield, 2004), Hong Kong (2006) and England (Liverpool, 2008). The 2012 Games will be held in Sydney, Australia.
