Seoul citizens will have a chance to enjoy one of the world's major winter sports events. The 2009-2010 season for the Snowboard Big Air World Cup will kick off on Dec. 11 for a three-day run here in Seoul, as the FIS selected it as a venue for the event on Sept. 25 at its general meeting in Zurich, the Switzerland.
The Seoul Metropolitan Government plans to set up a jumping pad that is 34 meters high and 100 meters long in the Gwanghwamun Square in preparation for the event. On Dec. 11-12, ski jump, snow board and gala shows are to be held there, while qualifying matches and finals for the World Cup will be held on the final day.
To complement the competition, Seoul City will open a skating rink in the square and hold a large-scale music concert and a festival of lights to provide diverse cultural events for citizens.
This marks the first time that the Big Air World Cup has been held in the central area of a capital city such as Seoul and it is also the first time that an Asian country has hosted the event. The Big Air World Cup is a winter sports event where snow boarders compete on how far they jump after sliding down a slope.
Turning it into national event helping draw support for Korea's hosting of 2018 PyeongChang Olympic Winter Games
Intended to enlist support for PyeongChang's pursuit of hosting the 2018 Olympics Winter Games, the FIS Snowboard World Cup Big Air will draw top-class snowboard competitors from across the globe to Seoul.
“Given that Big Air's seasons have been held in such major European cities as London, Stockholm and Barcelona, the hosting of the event here demonstrates how much Seoul's international status has been enhanced, a Seoul official said. “We will try to prepare the event not just for Seoul citizens but also as a national festival for all Korean people.”
