The true value of the E-mil-le bell lies in its sound. The solemn and clear reverberation of the bell is a mystery unique to the E-mil-le bell.
The official name of the E-mil-le bell is 'Sung-duk-dae-wang-shin-jong', and it is designated as National Treasure No. 29 of Korea. King Kyung-duk of the Shilla dynasty prepared 72,000kg of copper and began the creation of the bell as a tribute to his father, King Sung-duk, which King Kyung-duk's son King Hye-gong completed in 770 A.D. Sadly, the sound of the bell has not been heard since 1993, as the bell's fragile condition has made it necessary to place it under protection. The E-mil-le bell, with its solemn, clear and long reverberation, has a height of 3.7m, a circumference of 7 m, and weighs 22 tons. It has a lotus flower design on both sides, and the flower must be struck to create the ideal sound. On the body of the bell is depicted various figures, such as beautiful picture of ascending dragons. The beautiful shape of the bell is achieved by the bulging lower middle of the bell and the narrowed bottom. The shape gives a solemn atmosphere to the bell, but the true value of the E-mil-le bell lies in its sound. The lasting reverberation of the bell cannot be duplicated by any other bell, and is a mystery unique to the E-mil-le bell alone.
