Sept. 19 2009 - Korea Foundation for International Culture Exchange (Chairman Younghoon David Kim, hereinafter called ‘the foundation’) will hold 「2009 Asia Song Festival」 which became Asia’s best pop song festival in cooperation with Seoul City in Sangam World Cup Stadium, in northwestern Seoul.
Asia’s biggest song festival, 「2008 Asia Song Festival」, the 6th of its kind this year will be held in September 19 (Sat.) at 6 pm in Sangam World Cup Stadium in Seoul.
This event which started with 9 teams from 7 Asian countries in 2004 as a part of cultural exchanges between Asian countries has developed every year. In 2008, 22 teams of top singers from 12 Asian countries participated in the festival and performed magnificent concerts.
This year, 15 teams of top singers representing 9 Asian countries including Korea, Japan, China, Taiwan and Thailand will heat up ‘Sangam Field’ at night of the fall.
Korea’s representative singers who will take part in this festival are an idol group of 13 men, ‘Super Junior’ which won popularity throughout Asia including Japan, Taiwan and Thailand as well as Korea and ‘Girl’s Generation’ which started the golden age of Korean female idol group since 2007 and has grown as national idol female group as beloved by all generations and genders after releasing single album, “Gee” this year.
Among Japanese top artists are the most popular male solo singer and visual rock singer, ‘Gackt’ who successfully performed single concert in Korea and Japan’s most popular womand and man couple group, ‘mihimaru GT’ which performed for two consecutive years at the NHK Red & White Songfest, awarded the Golden Award of the 48th Japan Record Awards, awarded this year’s Cable Radio Award of the All Japan Cable Radio Awards and became the “most popular artist” as its entertaining dance song “Kibun jojo” recorded a hit throughout the country.
An idol in China, ‘Li Yu Chun (李宇春)’ who appeared on the cover of Time magazine, Asia edition in 2007 after winning enormous popularity in the mainland by grabbing the top prize at the “Super Girl” Hunan Broadcasting of China. He was awarded the Best Singer in China Award at the MTV Asia Awards in 2008.
As Taiwanese representative singer, ‘Luo Zhi Xiang (羅志祥)’ who is the most popular male solo singer in Taiwan and as one of the 'New Four Big Heavenly Kings’, was selected as a model for Chinese-speaking people of Pepsi Cola where only the best stars are selected as their advertisement models will show up.
‘Leon Lai (黎明)’ will represent Hong Kong, who is the most famous top singer and actor as one of the 'New Four Big Heavenly Kings’ among Chinese-speaking people.
From Taiwan, ‘K-Otic’ will participate in the festival, who is the latest popular boy band group in Thailand comprised of 5 members from three nationalities including Thailand, Japan and Korea.
From Vietnam, ‘Ho Ngoc Ha’, one of the most popular female actress in Vietnam who started her career as a model after she won the first prize at the 1st Vietnamese Super Model Contest and from Indonesia will come and ‘Agnes Monica’ who is the top female singer and actress in Indonesia, called the Britney Spears of Indonesia and debuted in Korea by showing splendid stage manner and singing ability in ASF last year will participate again in ASF this year.
Especially, in this year’s festival, the foundation invited ‘Ruslana,’ Ukraina’s most popular singer as well as a parliamentarian who led the success of the Orange Revolution a democratic movement in Ukraine by considering the expanded base of ASF as it was broadcasted by major TV companies in overseas 30 countries including USA and Europe last year. She earned the first place at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2004. (The winner in 2003 was pop star Celine Dion) and recorded the top song for ten weeks at the Europe POP Music Chart.
Her representative song “Wild Dance was 105th on the Billboard Chart (Hot 100) during the first week of sales in the United States, was awarded the Best Singer Award of the World Music Awards held in Monaco by selling the highest sales of records and recorded the top song for ten weeks at the Europe POP Music Chart. Therefore, we can expect ASF to be well-known in Europe.
The organizer announced the first lineup of participating singers because there were too many speculative new articles about the festival and furious requests from fans to inform the participating singers. It will open in mid-August the 2nd lineup including two Korean top singers and 1 Asian most popular singer as a special guest.
Especially, ‘Asia’s Best New Singer’ which is awarded to 1~2 new artist teams in the spotlight every year will be announced in the official 2nd lineup of ASF. The award winners became the talk of the town since they were grown as Asian stars. So far, Korean singers including SHINee, Seeya and FT Island, Japanese female idol group, ‘Berryz Kobo (Berryz工房)’ comprised of 5 members, Taiwan’s ‘James’ and ERU won the award.
This event will be the biggest event in history as being organized by Korea Foundation for International Culture Exchange and Seoul city and sponsored by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and Korea Tourism Organization.
ASF, as a unique pop culture festival where Asia’s top singers participate, attracts attention from overseas countries and induced more than 25000 foreign tourists until now. In the 5th ASF last year, 4,000 foreigners visited Korea to watch the show and it is expected that 5,000 visitors will come to Korea only to attend ASF.
ASF is a free concert and it is possible to download the admission ticket on the organizer, KOFICE’s ASF official website, www.asf.or.kr in early September same as in the 1st ~5th festival. It is also possible to see the information of participating top singers from home and abroad on the official website from July 27.
Recently, as digital information communication industry develops, the offline music market is dwarfed by the online market, said Younghoon David Kim, chairman of KOFICE. According to him, balanced growth is necessary for the development of the music market and the foundation organized ‘ASF’ in order to revitalize the music market which recently shows a downward trend than before and especially to create an environment where Asia can be grown as a single music market. He also said that ASF produced Asia’s top stars who are not only famous in their countries and it gradually plays a role of window which promotes Asia’s leading companies in the music industry to cooperate each other and grow altogether. He announced the meaning of this event as saying “This event will become the most representative brand of Asia’s cultural exchange and cooperation in the future and further, it will provide an opportunity for Asia to create cultural consensus called ‘Asia is one’ to enhance their competitiveness in the global music market.
