The Seoul Lantern Festival will be held at Cheonggye Plaza and Cheonggyecheon (Stream) with an elaborately-decorated opening performance ahead of the beginning of The 2010-2012 Visit Korea Years – With Seoul.
The festival is designed to deliver a message of invitation and welcome to people around the world by lighting lanterns representing brightness, warmness and hope. With lanterns from all over the world on display, the Seoul Lantern Festival is also aimed at becoming a venue of sharing a global culture and helping Seoul overcome the global economic crisis by increasing its competitiveness as an international tourist destination by actively advertizing The 2010-2012 Visit Korea Years – With Seoul.
Beating heart towards Seoul – A unique opening ceremony hoping to woo 10 million tourists (Nov. 11, 19:00)
The opening ceremony to celebrate the 50-day countdown before the beginning of The 2010-2012 Visit Korea Years – With Seoul will be featured with various events with some 2,000 foreign tourists, foreign residents and ambassadors as well as civic PR ambassadors slated to attend. Main events are planned for the opening ceremony, a congratulatory concert and the Seoul Lantern Festival.
Seoul's light shines on the world – The Seoul Lantern Festival (Nov. 11-22)
In conjunction with the opening ceremony to celebrate the 50-day countdown before the beginning of The 2010-2012 Visit Korea Years – With Seoul, the Seoul Lantern Festival will be held from Nov. 11 for five days under the theme of four Ryu (waves) such as Gyoryu, Wollyu, Hallyu and Illyu. About 10,000 lanterns from some 20 countries will emit their beautiful and fantastic glow along Cheonggyecheon (Stream). Also, at a fountain of Cheonggye Plaza, Haechi, a mythical animal reborn as a character representing Seoul, and Pororo, an animation character, will be on view with 140 large lanterns.
