Korea’s Dokdo Island is expected to be covered more widely in school textbooks.
The Minister of Education, Science and Technology Ahn Byong-man revealed during his Jun. 28 reporting session to the National Assembly’s special committee in defense of Dokdo Island that the ministry plans to increase the explanatory part on the island in school textbooks for elementary, middle and high schools.
According to the minister, Korea will strengthen its claim over the island by adding more details to the status of the island in eight school textbooks. This implies that much of the description on Dokdo Island currently only in the teacher’s edition will be shown in students’ books.
The eight school textbooks subject for revision are the social studies book for 5th and 6th grades, ethics books for 3rd and 4th grades, another ethics book for 7th grade and five books (social studies, East Asian history, world geography, law & society and politics) for high school students.
According to the 2007 revision, elementary school books describe the island as illegally claimed by Japan during the Russo-Japanese War, while middle school books look into the symbolic and geological significance of the island and high school books focus on escalating tension in the region surrounding Japan’s continued unjustifiable claim.
Minister Ahn stressed that the education ministry will have extended Dokdo descriptions to five elementary school textbooks by 2011, four middle school textbooks by 2012 and a total of eight elementary school textbooks by 2014.
The education ministry also decided to include questions on Dokdo for the official Korean history test held for Koreans living overseas by the state-run National History Compilation Committee.
